Evolution Of Betegaon Farm

Located in Palghar along Maharashtra’s western coast, Betegaon Farm was established over a century ago, drawn by the region’s fertile grasslands and favourable agro-climatic conditions. These lands once played an important role in supporting Mumbai’s cattle population through nutritious fodder cultivation.

Recognising the long-term value of native grasses and sustainable cattle care, Bombay Gowrakshak Mandali (BGM) chose Betegaon as the foundation for its work in indigenous animal welfare. The farm began with traditional cattle rearing and grazing practices, rooted in ethical care and respect for the land.

HISTORY & MILESTONES

Over time, Betegaon Farm evolved steadily, adopting modern agricultural methods while preserving its traditional ethos. Today, it functions as a sustainable farm supporting indigenous cattle, responsible fodder cultivation, and ecological balance.

FROM LAND TO LEGACY

As Betegaon Farm evolved, BGM’s focus expanded toward structured indigenous cattle preservation, with a special emphasis on the Gir breed. The selection of this land was driven by its favourable climate, native grasses, and capacity to support long-term cattle welfare in a sustainable manner.

Over the years, the farm developed into a dedicated Gir Cow Reserve, balancing traditional cattle-rearing wisdom with modern, science-backed practices. Emphasis has remained on cow comfort, ethical breeding, and maintaining genetic purity, supported by improved shelters, organised breeding systems, and consistent veterinary care.

Today, this approach reflects BGM’s long-term vision to build a responsible breeding and preservation model that prioritises animal well-being, ecological balance, and the protection of India’s indigenous cattle heritage.
