Learning by Experience: Education in Environment, Agriculture & Animal Husbandry for Tribal School Children

In an effort to deepen the connection between tribal school children and their natural environment, BGM Foundation initiated “Learning by Experience,” a four-week educational module delivered in six ashramshalas across Palghar. The programme introduced young students (aged 10–14) to the fundamentals of sustainable agriculture, animal care, soil health, composting, and water conservation through hands-on learning.

Conducted by trained eco-educators and field practitioners, the sessions blended storytelling, creative play, guided observation, and small experiments. Students participated in seed planting, soil testing, cow care, and eco-craft projects. The programme fostered curiosity, environmental sensitivity, and pride in local ecological knowledge systems.
Children were encouraged to maintain observation notebooks and create small home gardens, while teachers noted improved attentiveness and participation. Plans are underway to support school eco-clubs, establish demonstration gardens on campuses, and integrate the module with the district’s formal curriculum through DIET (District Institute of Education and Training).
“Learning by Experience” not only enhanced environmental literacy among tribal children but also laid the foundation for future engagement in sustainable rural livelihoods.
