Shining Hope: Reflective Belt for Cattle Safety

Recognising the increasing number of road accidents involving stray and domestic cattle, BGM Foundation launched “Shining Hope,” an animal safety initiative in partnership with The Resilient Foundation. The project distributes high-visibility reflective belts to cattle, particularly in accident-prone and low-visibility rural areas.
In its first phase, over 1,000 belts were distributed across 30 villages in Palghar district. The belts were fastened around the necks of stray and domestic cattle, enabling motorists to spot them from a distance, especially during nighttime driving. Awareness sessions were also conducted in schools, villages, and with transporters to sensitise communities about road safety and animal care.
The initiative brought together stakeholders ranging from Gram Panchayats and school eco-clubs to traffic police and cattle owners. Rural youth were trained as volunteers to assist in distribution and data tracking. Early reports indicated a decline in night-time cattle-related accidents and a positive reception from both communities and authorities.
BGM Foundation intends to integrate this initiative with its larger animal welfare programs by coupling reflective belt distribution with vaccination drives and health camps, ensuring comprehensive cattle protection. Future phases aim to cover more tribal belts and explore partnerships with district transport departments.
